The Times They Are A-Changin’

I stumbled across this tidbit the other day: There are two Grammy categories for “best packaging.” One of the nominees last year was the USB flash drive for The White Stripes’ Icky Thump. I don’t see that one going down in history beside Sticky Fingers or Dark Side of The Moon, but hey”¦ at least the category still exists. My money is on the iTunes homepage next year.

An Inconvenient Sell-Through Rate

AdAge.com reports on the PR campaign the magazine industry has created to counter growing concerns about the environmental impact of their product.

“It’s easy to envision a crisis of rising expectations bearing down on the magazine business if environmentalists start to target the waste produced by industry-standard practices. If that happens, an annual “green” issue won’t be enough to manage relationships with readers.”

“One particular area of concern is how the industry feeds the newsstands. For every copy of a magazine that sells on newsstands, publishers often print and deliver another three copies that just sit there until they’re out of date.”
